Smart Bro Pocket WiFi Initial Setup and Test

After unboxing the Smart Bro Pocket WiFi I ordered through the Smart Online Store, it's time for a test.

So following the instructions from the manual, I inserted the SIM card. It's quite challenging to insert because the port is made for a full sized SIM but the free one which came with the package can fall apart anytime and transform itself into a micro SIM! Anyway, I was able to properly do it. 

Next, I powered on the device and waited for the Internet and WiFi lights to indicate that the gadget is receiving a signal. The Pocket WiFi's battery has initial charging and comes with free 300MB valid for 3 days. This will allow us to test the data connectivity without having to load it just yet.

  • 2 smart phones
  • 2 tablets
  • 1 laptop

All gadgets we used had no problem locating the Pocket WiFi by it's default name. I also easily changed the WiFi name and setup a password from the Smart Bro interface. You can access this by typing the default gateway 192.168.1.1 through your browser. In my case, the interface screen actually automatically popped up the moment I connected my laptop to the Pocket WiFi. Once in the interface, you can also choose an encryption mode to make sure that the device is secure from unauthorized users. Choose WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSKMake sure not to change anything else so as not to mess up the system.

Internet Speed and Signal Strength


It's fast enough and definitely worth it's price (which we paid in full). Other than the prepaid version, you can also choose a plan so you won't have to worry about loading every time. I only needed a prepaid for out of town trips. I have tested the device in far flung Honda bay of Palawan while river cruising through the mangroves at San Carlos. The signal and speed are also great here at El Nido (also in Palawan). There are places while on the road where the connection is intermittent though. But all in all, so far so good.

  1. hi I am using the same device but the problem is that I can only connect to internet when the cable is plugged in to my laptop.If I unplug it and connect with the wifi, I am able to get a signal but "unidentified network" you know what seems to be the problem?much appreciated..

  2. Just to make sure that I got it correctly. We can change the Wifi name and PW by going that gateway right? Will it work kung sa phone browser sya iaccess? Wala kasi yung laptop ko ngayon since wala ako sa bahay eh I'm planning to buy one this week. Salamat po. :)

  3. If you can access the GUI from your mobile phone's browser, then you can do that. I tried it on my phone and yes, I can open the modem's gateway.

    1. Are you talking about the pocket WiFi? If you are, which part is it? The light on the left is for battery status and the other green light is for signal (far right). The latter should be blinking if it's connected. If not, then access the GUI (192.168.1.1) when your device is connected and check the device's status - connected or not, any SMS from the network, etc.

    4. Ganyan din problem ng sakin steady GREEN lang ung Signal LED. When I hit the "Connect" button diba dapat may lalabas na "SUCCESS" pero ang sakin lumalabas "FAILURE"..

    5. ^Are you trying it right now? Ganyan din sa kin as of the moment as well as several times these past few days. FAILURE din ang response sometimes instead of SUCCESS and the signal light is also steady green. I don't know kung dahil sa ulan.

    6. Ganyan din po problema ng sakin. Steady green lang ung Signal LED. And dun sa GUI instead na "Disconnect" eh "Connect" ung nakalagay so I tried to hit the button kaso imbes na "SUCCESS" ay "FAILURE" yung lumalabas sakin. 3 days na syang ganun minsan magbliblink then biglang mags-steady nanaman ulit. May problema ba talaga ung network ngayon? Thanks sa help.

    8. Same problem po. Naka strady green lang yung signal light then kapag chineck ko yung sa information sa 192.168.1.1, di niya narread yung sim card number..(---------) ganyan lang. Ano po recommend niyo? Then kapag kino-connect ko naman. Failure pa din. Mahigit 1week na. I've to reset it, yet ganun pa din po.

    11. Pwede. Try mong dalhin sa ibang lugar. Try mo din iconnect ang ibang gadget (laptop, PC etc.) to see na hindi yung gadget/device connected ang issue.

    1. Can you access the interface? Check if your SIM card/account is still active. Maybe that's why it's red and the network is not detected. Otherwise, do bring it to a Smart Bro office.

    1. I don't notice how long kasi most often, I use it habang naka-charge (which is bad). Basta, hindi na nagbli-blink yung battery indicator, full charged na yun.

    1. Okay lang yang blinking light. It means there is signal. Pag steady green kasi yung network light, walang connection or limited.

    1. Anong address ng GUI? 192.168.1.1? Isang info lang ang needed and "smartbro" lang ang kelangan ilogin. Smart bro pocket WiFi po ba yan? Kasi pag canopy (yung may antenna), iba ang username & password. It's the service reference number and then the account number if I am not mistaken. Contact Smart na lang po para sure. Dial *1888 on a Smart sim phone.

    1. Actually, no need to do that eh. Just power on the pocket WiFi, then access the GUI via 192.168.1.1, login with "smartbro" and load and register for promos. May signal ba? Last light on the right. And when you access the GUI, can you see your phone connected? It should show on the homepage dashboard, plus sa left, it says "disconnect" kapag connected.

      Try calling *1888 on a Smart sim for tech assistance from Smart Bro.

    1. Blinking green when charging; steady green when fully charged. Red means the battery is almost drained. Are you using the pocket WiFi modem while charging? It will damage the battery inside.

    3. Pag di na ma-access yung gateway (192.168.1.1 or something), try to contact Smart support na lang. I have no idea kung paano ang configuration sa modem mismo lalo na kung di na ma-access yung default gateway. Wala rin yatang reset button sa pocket Wi-Fi nila.

  25. Received the zte smart pocket wifi couple of hours ago. Changed the name and pword already via the gui. Problem ko is red signal up to now. How long before sim is activated by smart. Is there a smart number i can call using a non smart phone? Is there like a 24hr activation period upon receiving device or inserting sim?

  27. Passed by smart in ghills. Also followed up via PLDT account thru 171. They said the job order has been placed already. Outstanding efficiency. Ive followed up w them for activation 4 x probably and each time is a wait 24/48hr advice. 6 days na. Not to mention i placed the order May 18 and it never got delivered til last week after numerous followups via 171.

  30. Yung Smartbro 4G pocket wifi ko po is solid red yung ilaw ng signal. at kapag nagcoconnect po ako ng device, lagi pong may lumalabas na sign in to wifi network. Ano pong gagawin ko eh ilang beses ko nang nai-sign in sa 192.168.1.1 tapos natry ko na ngang lagyan ng password eh.

    1. Yung network signal na green to red has nothing to do with your load. It's green when receiving signal and red if not; whether or not may load.

  41. Hello po, ung smartbro wifi zte ko po, ung signal nya is changing from 2g/hspa lang. Pag pinalitan ko sa settings ng 4g only, red signal lang po sya. Bakot po kaya? Sayang lang linoad ko.     1. Open the pocket WiFi and see if the battery comes off. Bring it to a cellphone shop to check if they have a battery model that's similar. In Metro Manila, try Greenhills Shopping Center. You can also visit any Smart office in malls.

    1. Try another charger na compatible kung meron. Kung wala, bring it to any Smart center para ma-test nila. I'm sure they will at least let you try a charger na compatible to test your unit.

    1. Try troubleshooting. See kung may web access pag ibang device. Pag meron, baka phone mo may issue. Also, powercycle (power off/on). Check Wi-Fi settings sa modem.

    1. Yellow light indicator? Yung bagong model ba ito? The LTE one? Baka iba na po light indicators nun dun sa model on this post.

    1. Try isolating the problem. Check mo sa ibang gadget (PC, laptop, smartphone) kung gagana to test kung hindi yung pocket wi-fi mismo ang problema.

    2. hello po, cnu po kaya nakakaalam kung panu gamitin ang internet wifi ng smartbro? gusto ko sana e connect ang smartbro ko sa wifi na nasa sala para lumakas ang signal ng net sa room ko. try ko e connect, connected nman cya pro wala ako internet. paki tut po sa marunong. pldthomedsl po ang internet naming, ip add is 192.168.1.1. sana po may makatulong. salamat.

  62. Need help po medyo bago na lte pocket wifi na po ung nabili namin pero palagi pong red yung signal niya the yellow signal which means its connected is not coming back until the day has passed po

  63. Yung saakin po nag blink naman po yung green light na signal pero di ko maganit. Limited lng nakalagay at kailangan ko mag register sa kahit anong promo para magamit ko. Pano po kaya ito iseset sa regular charges po. Yung regular load mismo ang gagamitin at di na kailangang iunli. Please help po. Thanks po

  65. Hi Maria. Just got myself a pocket WiFi. I noticed mga 4 hours lang battery life. Can I leave it plugged in for 12 hours at most with minimal data usage and not damage the battery? Thanks!

    1. I do that all the time. :) It's plugged in while on but I remove the charger once the battery is full (battery icon stops blinking). So far, it still works although I don't really use it all the time.

  66. Hi! Yung signal po sa pocket wifi ko sa smartbro is solid na red, hindi po expired ang sim. Sa phone ko na nga niregister. Tapos nung inAccess ko yung GUI nakalagay sa icon ng antenna is no service. Sa far left side nakalagay e CONNECT. Ikini-click ko pero downgraded. Di sya clickable. Ano dapat gawin? Sinubukan ko na sya sa laptop at sa cp wala talaga. Ano po ba problema sa PWF device o sa network? The sim is properly working pag nasa phone.

    1. Try to call Smart or bring the pocket WiFi to a local Smart office. If you can access the interface but there's no signal, baka sa unit mismo ang issue.
