Michelle’s Homemade: Inspired by golden ties

COVID-19 has presented numerous challenges for Michelle’s Homemade. Foot traffic at their stores dwindled and logistics has been a nightmare. Despite this, the company presses on, putting a premium on building stronger ties among its employees and the community.

Cook Jay Suarez has been with the company for 15 years already. He says that through his work, he has been able to provide for his family.

“Naitaguyod ko ang pamilya ko at napag-aral ko ang mga anak ko dahil sa trabaho. Ngayong may pandemya, natulungan din kami ng kompanya, sinigurado nilang maayos ang kalagayan namin,” Jay says. During the lockdowns, the company has provided transportation and lodging for its employees.

Aside from Jay and his colleagues, Michelle’s Homemade also works with farming communities in Laguna, Mindoro and Quezon for their products such as their Golden Sana Banana Chips. This allows them to provide livelihood opportunities to these individuals and their families, who also serve as the company’s inspiration during this ordeal.

“We work with farming communities and 40 employees. We’re committed to get by this crisis and ensure our business will survive so we can continue to take care of our people,” says Michelle Reyes, President of Conrey Specialty Foods Inc.

Despite the challenges, Michelle’s Homemade Goodies still found a way to extend a helping hand to frontliners by donating food and PPEs. Even their employees and suppliers joined the initiative. “We donated our puto to health workers. Kahit crisis, tumutulong pa rin kami. In the end, our employees also feel engaged,” Michelle says.

Michelle adds that their presence online and their strong ties with their retail partners such as Kultura help them stay afloat during the pandemic.

“We invested on our own website, and Kultura has been helping us in the marketing of our products,” Michelle says.

Michelle’s Homemade Banana Chips are available at Kultura located in SM Malls. You may also order Michelle’s Homemade Goodies’ Banana Chips and other uniquely Filipino items at www.kulturafilipino.com.
